Choosing a chiropractor?

All of us at one time or another have turned to a friend or family member, or perhaps even the yellow pages to find "a good doctor". Ideally, we would all like to have a doctor that comes highly recommended. While recommendations are invaluable, it is also important to find a practitioner that can meet your own specific needs. Asking the right questions, can help insure that your needs get met. Below, you will find guidelines to help you ask the right chiropractic questions, so that when you are in the market for "a good chiropractor", you will be able to find one.

Personality:

Interview your chiropractor and determine if he/she is a good match for you:
· Do they take their time?
· Do they answer all your questions?
· Do they listen to you tell your story?
· Can you trust your doctor with your care?
· Does your doctor make you feel at ease, or are you tense when you go for a visit?

Philosophy:

Ask your chiropractor to define chiropractic for you. Chiropractors fall along a spectrum in terms of their thoughts on chiropractic. At one end of the spectrum, chiropractors offer a more holistic approach. At the other end, a more allopathic, or traditional medical approach.
· Do you just adjust just the spine?
· Do you believe in an innate intelligence of the body?
· Do you adjust the extremities (bones of arms and legs)?
· Do you treat symptoms (headaches, ear infections, back pain)?

Technique:

There are many different approaches to treating the body through chiropractic. Some chiropractors adjust with their hands, while others use various instruments. Additionally, some chiropractors adjust "forcefully", while others more "lightly". There are also "named techniques" that chiropractors use. Ask your chiropractor which techniques they use and why? It is sometimes helpful to ask where your chiropractor went to school as this often dictates technique.
· Which techniques do you use?
· Do you use your hands, or do you use instruments?
· Do you do "high force" adjusting, or "low force" adjusting?
